Assessments - adding attempts, results and outcomes to Assessments

Introduction

Once an assessment is on a learner's plan, you can record what actually happens against it: each attempt the learner makes, the result of that attempt, and whether the assessment is complete. Capturing this in the learning plan keeps a clear, auditable history of how a learner progressed through an assessment — including resits — all in one place, visible to the learner and your team.

This article shows you how to record an attempt, edit it if needed, add a result, and understand what each result does to the assessment. It assumes the assessment has already been added to the plan — see the companion article, How to Add an Assessment.

  • Decide your resit position before you mark a fail. Marking a fail as resit not required closes the assessment, so be clear on the outcome before you confirm it.
  • A learner can see the attempts and results you add to their Plan.
  • If a resit is required, use the same assessment to track all of the individual attempts. That way, through reporting you can assess the number of attempts it takes different learners for different assessments.

How to: Record an Attempt

To record an attempt for a Learner

  1. Locate the Learner and go to their Learning Plan
  2. Open an Assessment you want to add an attempt to.
  3. Select the Attempts tab, then click Add attempt.
  4. Complete the attempt form.
    • Fields marked with an asterisk (*) are mandatory.
  5. Select Add to record the attempt.

You can see the details added within the Attempts tab.

Please note: you can edit an attempt from here if you need to amend its details.

How to: Add a result to the attempt

Once an attempt has been recorded, you can add a result to it.

  1. Locate the Learner, and the Assessment you want to add results to.
  2. Click the Attempts tab, then click the 'Add Result' button
  3. Complete the form,
    • If you record the outcome as Fail or Cancelled, you have two options:
      • Resit required — the assessment remains open, and further attempts can be added.
      • Resit not required — the assessment is closed and marked as a failure.
    • Note that the outcomes selected determines what happens to the overall Assessment. See the table below for details
  4. Click 'Add'

The results can be seen at the bottom of the attempt information, in one simple view:

As above, the result you choose determines what happens to the assessment:

ResultWhat happens
Cancelled

Add a cancellation reason. You can choose whether a resit is required or not.

  • If you select resit required, you can add further attempts and work through the process again.
  • If you do not select resit required, the Assessment is closed as Cancelled.
PassThe assessment is closed and marked as a pass.
Fail

You can choose whether a resit is required or not.

  • If you select resit required, you can add further attempts and work through the process again.
  • If you do not select resit required, the Assessment is closed as Fail.

Please note: the learner can view their assessments, attempts and results in their own learning plan.
