Introduction
Active learning is a measure introduced into the Standard Reports to enable users to comply with the ESFA Funding rule to deliver some active learning (off-the-job training or English / maths training) in either every calendar month or every three calendar months (depending on the delivery model) of the practical period. As detailed in Apprenticeship funding rules 2024/25.
The report shows when the most recent active learning has taken place to ensure there has been delivery in the required time period and a drill-through report each for the OTJ Hours Log and the Learner’s Activity Submissions.
The Measure
This report is limited to Apprenticeships and is focussed on learners within their practical period. It doesn't include learners in end point assessment or those on a break.
The last active learning date is calculated as the most recent of:
- the last submission made against an activity by the learner
- the last approved Off the Job Hours from the log
- the last English or maths in OTJH Log - where submitted OTJH were rejected as "English and/or maths"
These dates are all available in the data table.
Learners are placed into one of three groups based on their delivery model:
Activity Based (leaner needs to complete some learning every calendar month)
- Active Learning rule met – the last active learning date is in this calendar month.
- Active Learning due – the last active learning date was in the last calendar month. Learners who started this month or returned from a break this month and who have not yet completed any active learning are also placed into this group.
- Active Learning rule not met – the last active learning date is before the last calendar month.
Day Release / Front Loaded / Block Release (leaner needs to complete some learning every three calendar months)
- Active Learning rule met – the last active learning date is in this calendar month or the previous two.
- Active Learning due – the last active learning date was three calendar months ago. Learners who started or returned from a break in the last two calendar months and who have not yet completed any active learning are also placed into this group.
- Active Learning rule not met – the last active learning date is more than three months ago.
The group is in the data table, and you can filter the report to just show learners in a specific group using the Active Learning Status slicer.
The cards at the top of the page show the following counts:
- Active Learning rule met - Count of learners with status Active Learning rule met.
- Active Learning required this month – Count of learners with status Active Learning Due or Active Learning rule not met.
- Active Learning rule not met – Count of learners with status Active Learning rule not met.
Note: For Activity Based learning, it is expected that the number of learners who have met the rule will start at zero each month and increase throughout the month as submissions are made and OTJHs are approved; resetting back to zero at the start of the next month.
